Where The Light Is EP
Rating: 3/5 stars
Salmon Arm, British Columbia-native Dan Bremnes was already a household name before signing a record deal with Capitol Christian Music Group. The singer/songwriter has won four GMA Canada Covenant Awards, including one for Artist of the Year, and toured with everyone from Crowder to Steven Curtis Chapman.
Where The Light Is introduces a broader audience to Bremnes’ signature style comparable to labelmates Matthew West and Shawn McDonald. The title track provides glimpses into the singer’s childhood. While he grew up in church, his mother was tragically killed in a car accident. The incident became a defining moment that shaped his faith journey and his early songwriting efforts.
Gentle pop gem “He Knows” and the sparse “Born Again” find Bremnes in-step with his modern CCM counterparts. However, it’s “Heart On Fire” that’s the real shining star of the short six-track collection. With a spacious chorus ready-made for robust singing, the song captures Bremnes’ unique ability to craft pop-centric, yet poetic anthems.
Once listeners preview Where The Light Is, Canada’s best kept secret will be out. Bremnes possesses too much talent for Canadians to keep him all to themselves.
