Let It Be Jesus
Rating: 4/5 stars
There is no voice sweeter than that of Christy Nockels. Her third solo project, Let It Be Jesus, reveals the vocalist at her best, doing what she was born to do—leading others in worship. The 11-track set was recorded live at Nockels’ home church, Passion City Church in Atlanta, Ga., this past December before a group of the singer’s closest friends and family.
Nockels—long known as a principle worship leader in the Passion movement—continues to carve her own niche as not only a worship leader, but also a songwriter on Let It Be Jesus. While upbeat lead cut “Freedom Song” and Americana-colored “If You Never” propel the album forward, it’s the ballads where Nockels really shines.
The singer cites “Everything Is Mine In You,” which she co-wrote with Ellie Holcomb, as her favorite track; and it’s bound to become an immediate listener favorite as well with its abundance of truth-filled nuggets tucked into a delightfully buoyant melody. “The Wondrous Cross” and “Leaning On You, Jesus” branch off from time-honored hymns, providing exquisite moments of worship. Meanwhile, “Wonderful Name,” co-written by Crowder, concludes the album on a high, praise-worthy note.
The centerpiece of the record comes in the form of the title track, a cut ready-made for Nockels’ heaven-sent voice—the most remarkable gift of the entire album.
