Students at the annual Passion conference were treated to a special performance Monday night (Jan. 2) when Carrie Underwood made a surprise appearance at the end of Crowder’s set. The country superstar–long known for her Christian beliefs–joined Crowder on the last chorus of his swampy smash “Lift Your Head Weary Sinner (Chains)” before launching into a powerful rendition of her No. 1 crossover hit “Something in the Water.” The song faired well at both Country and Christian radio in 2014 and has sold more than 1.1 million downloads to date.
While Passion is known for surprising attendees with special guests each year, Underwood is the only mainstream artist in the conference’s history to take the stage. Her surprise appearance closed out the first session of this year’s conference held at the Georgia Dome. With more than 50,000 students, ages 18-25, in attendance, Passion wraps today in Atlanta. In its 20th year, the Passion conference is led by founders Louie and Shelley Giglio. In addition to Crower and Underwood, Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Kristian Stanfill and the Passion Band, and Hillsong UNITED performed alongside well-known authors and speakers like Christine Caine, John Piper, Beth Moore, Levi Lusko and Francis Chan, among others.
